Alternative Provision

The Farm offers an alternative provision programme, where young people can access the farm to learn in a different environment, improve their self confidence, and improve wellbeing. This is run for young people who are struggling in mainstream school, have special educational needs, are out of education, or who have mental health challenges. This opportunity enables young people to build their confidence, and work on essential life skills such as teamwork, work to get back into school, and get valuable work experience.

Some examples of what we currently offer in our Alternative Provision Programme includes groups of individuals from schools working on team work and communication, 1-2-1 sessions for individuals needing space and needing a bespoke experience, and child centred packages for individuals wanting to gain experiences with farm life. We also offer animal assisted intervention sessions, which include animals in structured activities to boost wellbeing and assist in therapeutic support.

As well as offering structured and wellbeing boosting sessions, the farm is now proud to offer an AQA award for any students that would like a measured outcome. These awards in animal care, gardening, or farm maintenance boosts knowledge, confidence, life skills, and employability skills. Please add this option to the referral booking below if this is of interest.

Our alternative provision is flexible and holistic, and we are happy to have a chat about what is required.

Our alternative provision is quality assured through Southampton City Council - making sure we are offering the best quality provision for the young people in the city.

Please see below more information on our popular 1-2-1 alternative provision:

Our Alternative Provision has 3 main outcomes for the young people who join it:
  • Certificate: We offer a certificate in Animal care for all of our young people. This achievement certificate reflects all the work the young people do with each species of animal. This is holistic and made achievable for the different needs of the young person. As well as this, we can now offer an AQA award for any young person who would like this.
  • Mental Wellbeing: All of the young people that join us through alternative provision feed back about how much their mental wellbeing has improved by being around the animals on the farm. We believe that if the child's mental wellbeing has improved, all the other areas will improve as well.
  • Life skills: Working with the young person leading the session, we teach, encourage, and build on life skills such as team work, independence, confidence, and communication.

AQA Courses

We are very proud to have our farm registered to deliver the ‘Unit Award Scheme’ accredited by AQA. This accredited certification course is based around Animal Care, Gardening, Conservation, life skills, and so much more.

Our AQA students are rewarded with a formally recognised AQA certificate for successfully completing a unit or course module with us. These awards help to:
  • Build confidence
  • Promote wellbeing
  • Increase engagement and motivation
  • Encourage youth-led learning
  • Improve employability

Young people select the units they would like to learn, enabling them to work towards a clear, measurable outcome. They can complete single units, choose a themed set, or build a longer-term portfolio of certificates to demonstrate their skills, knowledge, and experience. We offer certificates for both short workshops/one-off modules and more advanced courses.

We are proud to offer a bespoke and child-led certification and learning programme, suitable for individuals or groups of all ages and abilities. Our programme is also SEND-friendly, with tailored support available to ensure everyone has the opportunity to achieve.

With our rescued and rehomed animals, extensive garden, and nature-rich setting, we have created a unique learning environment ideal for practical and land-based education. We offer a wide selection of AQA units, which can be taken individually or as part of a themed portfolio. These include:
  • Animal Husbandry and Care
